I was invited to a preview of a beautiful documentary at Ft. Snelling yesterday. A gentleman named Sheldon Wolf Child showed his film of the realization of a man's dream.
The dream was to have a 330 mile horseback ride to Mankato, where the day after Christmas long ago, President Lincoln ordered the mass murder of 38 Dakota Indians. They had been hungry and started battle for food for their people and the result was their assassination, the largest ever carried out in the USA.
Jim Miller dreamt it was time to go back to Mankato on horseback at Christmas and find forgiveness for all who participated in this sad reality. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY DID. From 330 miles away in South Dakota, where they lived, across snowy lands and down icy roads they rode for 16 days, to arrive on the 26th day of December in 2008.
What a powerful story. We have long felt the sting of self pity and the depression that comes with the idea that we are victims. 150 years later these people chose a different road and decided to become victors instead. The peace that comes with mercy and compassion is the whole story of the healing of humanity. We each have many stories like this one from many times and many lives.
In honour of these healers, those who chose to let go now and live in peace in their own hearts, let us all let go of something painful. See backwards to a death or a loss that breaks your heart and offer that broken heart to the Creator for healing.
Ask for the peace that passes all human understanding and embrace a new day filled with the love of life here and all it offers, easy and HARD.
Jim told me after that showing, my horses, because they are quarter horses, could have never made the trip, he said they only could have gotten a "quarter" of the way!!
Now that's what I like, sassy and willing to laugh, even after a film of tears. Thank you Jim and Sheldon and all who did this project, may the Universe use it in a mighty way!! Namaste' to all, Dr.Su
